Name:Gabriele Varrucciu (“VARRUX” to friends)
Hometown: Olbia, Sardinia, Italy
Known for: 2010 Italian Freestyle Champ, and being reckless in whatever I do!
Favorite maneuver: Very high shaka – the future (ponch into flaka)
Gear you’re riding right now: Freestyle 100 and Session 4.2, 4.7, 5.3
What piece of advice has stuck with you from when you first learned to windsurf? Do everything without fear and be as radical and fast as possible. Remember to have fun!
Most unusual place you’ve ever been: In a giant puddle, trying to do some windsurfing tricks in strong wind. But maybe for me, the most amazing and unusual place I’ve ever been is the United States!
Song guaranteed to pump you up before a session: All rock, brand new or old school, but especially my favorite band: Rise Against.
Red Bull or coffee? Beer during the day, Red Bull before going into the water, coffee after meals.
Most surreal (ie. heart-poundingly scary and/or insanely awesome) session: At the European Freestyle Pro Tour here in Sardinia in 2010…I went out in 75-80 knots with my 4.2 fully overpowered. It was really insane!
Worst place to take a first date: I think to a mall. There are too many people and a lot of confusion.
Favorite thing to do after windsurfing: Drink beer with friends, ride my motocross bike and drive my muscle cars.
If you could pass one thing on to the next generation of windsurfers, what would it be? Respect the sea, and give your best in every situation. Never give up!
So, what’s your goal for 2012? To travel and increase my level on top, and to do some PWA events besides the European Freestyle Championships.
